Liberty and Justice for All
As a Libertarian, I support the rights of all the people all the time. Immigrants are people too and must be protected from unfair and discriminatory laws.
Both Democrats and Republicans have failed to effectively address the immigration situation in this country. Republicans want to deport all immigrants and build walls. Democrats have been pushed by lobbyists to include policies that would not be acceptable either. I support policies that respect civil and economic rights under the framework of a limited government. Immigration is an economic benefit and a natural right. From a rights and limited government perspective, normalizing the situation of undocumented immigrants ought to take top priority.
Lack of legal status prevents undocumented immigrants from participating in economic and civic life. It’s not access to welfare that drives undocumented immigrants’ desire for legal status, but rather access to property and other rights that are, in our modern society, unfortunately tied to government documents and recognition. I support a pathway to citizenship and recognize the need for undocumented immigrants to have government recognition in order to buy and sell property, enter into contracts, and use the court system for dispute resolution, and so on. We need to depoliticize the issue and focus on solutions instead.
